If a meter is unavailable but symptoms are present, treat the assumed low blood sugar without delay.
The next step involves consuming 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrate. Ideal sources include four ounces (half a cup) of fruit juice or regular soda (not diet), three to four glucose tablets, or one tablespoon of sugar, honey, or corn syrup. Foods high in fat or fiber, like chocolate or whole fruit, should be avoided for immediate treatment because they slow down glucose absorption.
After consuming the 15 grams of carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes before rechecking the blood glucose level. If the level remains below 70 mg/dL, repeat the process: consume another 15 grams of carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes, and recheck. Continue this cycle until the blood sugar level is successfully raised to a safe range. Once normalized, a small snack containing both carbohydrate and protein, such as crackers with peanut butter, is recommended if the next scheduled meal is more than an hour away to help stabilize levels.
Why Hypoglycemia Occurs During Pregnancy
Hormonal shifts and the increased demand for glucose by the developing fetus can lead to a higher frequency of hypoglycemia, particularly in the first trimester. The body’s need for insulin fluctuates significantly throughout gestation. Knowing When to Call for Emergency Help
A low blood sugar episode becomes an emergency when it progresses to severe hypoglycemia, meaning the individual is unable to treat themselves. Severe symptoms include slurred speech, confusion, inability to swallow, or loss of consciousness. Attempting to give the person food or drink at this stage is extremely dangerous due to the risk of choking.
