The ocean is categorized into vertical zones defined by light penetration, temperature, and pressure. The pelagic zone refers to the open water column, encompassing most of the ocean’s volume. The epipelagic zone, also known as the sunlight zone, extends from the surface down to approximately 200 meters (660 feet). This uppermost layer receives ample sunlight, allowing photosynthesis and supporting diverse marine life.

Below the epipelagic zone is the mesopelagic, or twilight zone, stretching from 200 to 1,000 meters (3,300 feet). In this zone, sunlight is significantly reduced, making photosynthesis impossible, and temperatures drop. Deeper still are the bathypelagic (midnight), abyssopelagic (abyss), and hadalpelagic (trenches) zones, characterized by increasing darkness, extreme pressure, and near-freezing temperatures.

Where Dolphins Primarily Reside

Most dolphin species predominantly inhabit the epipelagic zone, the ocean’s sunlit surface layer. This zone teems with life, providing an abundant food supply for dolphins, which primarily prey on fish and squid. Sunlight supports phytoplankton, the microscopic algae forming the base of the marine food web, which sustains the organisms dolphins consume.

While primarily active in the epipelagic zone, some dolphin species dive into the upper mesopelagic zone for hunting. For instance, spinner dolphins in Hawaii might descend into this twilight zone at night to feed when their prey moves closer to the surface. Despite these deeper forays, the epipelagic zone remains their primary residence and hunting ground due to its rich resources.

Why Dolphins Choose Certain Zones

Dolphins prefer the epipelagic zone due to environmental factors supporting their survival. Abundant sunlight fuels photosynthesis, leading to a high concentration of prey species. Oxygen levels are also higher near the surface, supporting their active metabolism.

The epipelagic zone generally offers warmer and more stable temperatures than colder, deeper waters, which helps dolphins regulate their body temperature. Light penetration near the surface enhances visibility, aiding dolphins in hunting and navigating. These open waters also facilitate social behaviors, such as coordinated group hunting and communication within their pods. Surface waters can provide escape routes from predators and offer a safer, resource-rich environment for raising their young.

Habitat Diversity Among Dolphin Species

While many dolphin species are oceanic and prefer the open epipelagic zone, their habitats are diverse. Some, like bottlenose dolphins, frequently inhabit shallower, nearshore waters, including bays, estuaries, and coastal areas. These coastal dolphins often form smaller, more cohesive groups than their offshore counterparts.

Beyond marine environments, some unique dolphin species are freshwater inhabitants. River dolphins, such as the Amazon river dolphin, live exclusively in large river systems like the Amazon, Orinoco, and Tocantins-Araguaia basins. These species adapt to murky, shallow river conditions and are not found in ocean zones. Some dolphin populations also exhibit migratory patterns, moving between coastal and oceanic regions or following prey and temperature changes, generally remaining within the broader epipelagic realm.
