Vertical pupils create an astigmatic depth of field, meaning vertical contours, such as the body of prey, remain sharper across different distances, aiding in precise targeting. This optical feature is especially beneficial for smaller predators that hunt close to the ground, where judging short distances accurately is paramount.
How Slitted Pupils Operate
The operation of slitted pupils involves specialized muscle structures that allow for their unique range of constriction and dilation. Unlike circular pupils, which primarily use ring-shaped muscles, vertical slit pupils incorporate additional side muscles that facilitate a more complete closure.
