Hue refers to the actual color; a pure, vibrant red with a slight purplish secondary color is most prized, while brownish or orangey modifiers significantly lower the value.
Tone describes the lightness or darkness of the color, with the most desirable stones falling in the medium to medium-dark range. If the tone is too light, the stone is classified as a pink sapphire; if too dark, the gem appears inky and lifeless. Saturation is the purity and intensity of the color, and the highest-value rubies display vivid saturation free from gray or brown masking.
The ultimate standard is the legendary “Pigeon’s Blood” designation, describing a highly saturated, vivid red color with a subtle purplish tint. This high value is partly due to the stone’s unique chemical composition, featuring high chromium and low iron content. This composition causes the ruby to fluoresce a strong red color in daylight, giving the gem a distinctive internal glow.
Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight
While color is paramount, the physical characteristics of clarity, cut, and carat weight provide the supporting structure for a ruby’s valuation. Clarity refers to the internal features, known as inclusions, which are almost universally present in natural rubies. A ruby completely free of inclusions visible under 10x magnification is extremely rare and may suggest the stone is synthetic.
The highest-value rubies are considered “eye-clean,” meaning no inclusions are visible to the naked eye. Fine, needle-like inclusions of rutile, known as “silk,” can be acceptable or even desirable. Diffuse silk can scatter light, giving the ruby a soft, velvety appearance, or it can create asterism in a star ruby. The quality of the cut is evaluated on its proportions and symmetry, influencing how effectively the ruby handles light. A well-executed cut maximizes brilliance and ensures the color is evenly distributed, preventing “windowing.” Rubies are often cut into mixed cuts, such as cushion or oval shapes, to retain the maximum possible carat weight from the rough crystal.
Carat weight is the final intrinsic factor, and its influence on price is not linear. Since large, high-quality ruby crystals are rare, the price per carat increases exponentially as the weight exceeds one or two carats. Treatments and Geographic Origin
Two external factors—treatment and geographic origin—heavily influence a ruby’s market price. The vast majority of rubies are enhanced to improve their color or clarity. Heat treatment is the most common and widely accepted enhancement, often performed at high temperatures to dissolve rutile silk and lighten dark areas.
A significant distinction exists between standard heat treatment and more aggressive alterations, such as lead-glass filling. Lead-glass filling involves injecting a glass-like substance into surface-reaching fractures to dramatically improve clarity and transparency. This treatment introduces a non-durable material and drastically reduces the ruby’s value. Full disclosure of any treatment is required by law and ethical practice.
The provenance of a ruby carries a substantial market premium, particularly for stones from historically significant locations. Rubies from the Mogok Valley in Myanmar (formerly Burma) command the highest prices due to their association with the finest color and strong fluorescence. Although modern deposits, like those in Mozambique, produce comparable quality stones, the Burmese origin carries a legacy buyers are willing to pay for.
Since treatments and origins are invisible to the unaided eye, professional verification is necessary for determining value. Third-party gemological laboratories, such as the GIA or SSEF, issue detailed reports. These reports verify a stone’s natural status, confirm treatments, and often determine its geographic origin.
