How Permethrin Works

Under normal conditions, these sodium channels open and close rapidly to transmit nerve impulses. Permethrin binds to these channels, prolonging their opening and preventing them from closing properly. This leads to a sustained influx of sodium ions, causing prolonged depolarization of the nerve membrane. The disruption results in hyperexcitability, muscle spasms, paralysis, and ultimately, the death of the insect.

Mosquitoes are a primary target, with permethrin used in public health programs and on treated clothing to help prevent bites and disease transmission. Fleas and lice are susceptible, making permethrin a component in some pet treatments and human topical applications.
