The Importance of Soil Texture and Drainage
Mint requires soil that manages a difficult balance: it must retain consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. The ideal physical structure is a loose, well-draining loam or sandy loam, which prevents water from pooling around the shallow root system. This balance is crucial because poor drainage is the primary cause of root rot, a fungal condition that quickly damages and kills mint plants.
A soil with too much clay compacts easily, restricting oxygen flow to the roots and causing excess water retention. Conversely, pure sand drains too quickly, making it difficult to maintain the damp conditions the plant prefers, leading to wilting and reduced productivity. The soil texture must be light and crumbly enough to allow rapid percolation, ideally draining a test hole within an hour, while organic matter holds onto a sufficient water reserve.
Mint’s Ideal pH and Nutrient Profile
