This geological context explains its common association with other secondary lead minerals like pyromorphite and mimetite.

The mineral crystallizes in the tetragonal system, frequently forming thin, square, or pyramidal crystals with a brilliant, adamantine luster. Its appearance is characterized by intense, warm colors, including bright yellow, orange, and deep red. Wulfenite is quite delicate, possessing a low Mohs hardness of only 2.5 to 3.0.

Primary Industrial Role: Molybdenum Ore

Wulfenite is primarily recognized as a potential ore for molybdenum (\(\text{Mo}\)), a valuable transition metal. While molybdenite (\(\text{MoS}_2\)) is the predominant commercial source, wulfenite deposits can sometimes be processed to extract the metal when found in sufficient concentration. Geologists often use wulfenite as an indicator mineral, signaling the presence of a lead-molybdenum ore body.

Molybdenum is valued for its high melting point and ability to enhance material strength.
