This tiny creature typically weighs around 2 grams, comparable to a US dime. Its body length measures approximately 29 to 33 millimeters, making it about the size of a large bumblebee.
While the bumblebee bat is definitively the smallest mammal by body length and skull size, the Etruscan shrew (Suncus etruscus) is often cited for its minimal mass. The Etruscan shrew can weigh as little as 1.2 to 2.7 grams, sometimes slightly less than the bumblebee bat. However, its body length of 35 to 48 millimeters, excluding its tail, generally makes it longer. This distinction clarifies the bumblebee bat’s claim to the smallest mammal title.
Adapting to a Miniature World
Living at such a small scale presents significant physiological challenges, requiring specialized adaptations. The bumblebee bat maintains an incredibly high metabolic rate to generate body heat and energy. This high metabolism means it must constantly forage to meet its energy demands, making efficient hunting paramount. Echolocation is its primary tool for navigating its environment and locating prey in the dark.
The bat emits high-frequency sounds, interpreting echoes to create a detailed map of its surroundings and detect small insects. Its diet primarily consists of insects such as flies, mosquitoes, beetles, and spiders, caught either in flight or by gleaning from foliage. Bumblebee bats roost predominantly in warm limestone caves along rivers in western Thailand and southeastern Myanmar. Bumblebee bats form colonies varying in size, from small groups of 10 to 15 individuals to larger aggregations averaging around 100, with some caves housing up to 500 bats. Their activity periods are brief, typically leaving their roosts for about 30 minutes at dusk and another 20 minutes at dawn to forage. Females typically give birth to a single offspring annually, usually in late April.

Despite their unique adaptations, bumblebee bats face considerable threats to their survival. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently classifies the species as “Near Threatened,” though it was previously listed as “Endangered” for many years. This classification reflects ongoing concerns about their population trends and habitat integrity.
A primary threat stems from habitat destruction, including limestone quarrying, deforestation for agriculture, and logging activities in their foraging forests. Disturbance of their sensitive roosting sites within caves also poses a significant risk. Human activities such as tourism, guano collection, or other uses of caves can disrupt the bats’ breeding and roosting cycles.
Protecting the bumblebee bat is important for maintaining biodiversity and the health of its ecosystems.
