Many pathogens, such as the hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), can be present in an individual’s blood or certain body fluids without visible symptoms or a known diagnosis. This unseen danger necessitates a standardized approach to infection prevention.

This approach is rooted in the concept of “presumed infectivity,” meaning that all blood and certain specified body fluids are treated as if they are potentially infectious. This protective measure ensures that healthcare workers consistently use appropriate barriers, thereby minimizing the risk of exposure to pathogens that might otherwise go undetected. Essential Practices for Safety

Effective implementation of Universal Precautions relies on several core practices that create a barrier against infection transmission. Hand hygiene stands as a key component, requiring healthcare personnel to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub before and after patient contact, after contact with body fluids, and after removing gloves. This action significantly reduces the spread of microorganisms.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provides a physical barrier between healthcare workers and potentially infectious materials. This includes wearing gloves for contact with blood, body fluids, contaminated items, or non-intact skin; gowns during procedures likely to generate splashes; masks to prevent inhalation of large droplets; and eye protection to shield eyes from splashes or sprays. The specific type of PPE used depends on the anticipated type and extent of exposure.

Safe injection practices prevent pathogen transmission through contaminated needles or syringes. This involves using sterile, single-use needles and syringes for each patient, preventing recapping of used needles by hand, and immediately disposing of sharps in puncture-resistant containers. These measures prevent needlestick injuries and subsequent transmission of bloodborne pathogens.

Maintaining a clean and disinfected environment is another practice. This involves regularly cleaning and disinfecting patient care equipment and environmental surfaces that may become contaminated with blood or body fluids. Proper handling of contaminated linens, by placing them in appropriate bags at the point of use, also prevents the spread of pathogens. Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, which involve covering coughs and sneezes and performing hand hygiene, are integrated infection control measures that complement Universal Precautions.
