Earwigs: A Brief Overview

Earwigs belong to the insect order Dermaptera, encompassing over 2,000 species worldwide. They are recognized by their elongated, flattened bodies, typically reddish-brown to black. Their most notable feature is a pair of prominent, forceps-like appendages called cerci at the rear of their abdomen. Earwigs range in size from about 5 to 25 millimeters (0.2 to 1 inch). They prefer to inhabit damp, dark, and moist areas, commonly found under rocks, logs, leaf litter, and mulch during the day.

Their Role in the Ecosystem

Earwigs are omnivorous, consuming a diverse array of organic matter, allowing them to fulfill dual roles as both predators and decomposers. As predators, they actively hunt smaller, soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mites, and various insect larvae. This predatory behavior contributes to the natural regulation of pest populations in both wild and cultivated environments.

Beyond predation, earwigs serve as decomposers, breaking down decaying plant material, fungi, and organic debris. By consuming and processing this decaying matter, they facilitate the return of essential nutrients to the soil, a process for maintaining soil fertility and supporting plant growth.

Earwigs also become a food source for various other animals, including birds, lizards, spiders, and some predatory insects, integrating them into the broader food web. Their diverse feeding habits and role in decomposition contribute to the balance of natural environments.

Earwigs and Human Environments

Earwigs frequently interact with human spaces, particularly gardens and residential areas. In gardens, they can sometimes be considered pests, feeding on soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries, vegetables such as lettuce and corn silks, and ornamental plants like dahlias and marigolds. This feeding can result in irregular holes or chewed margins on leaves and damage to fruits.

However, earwigs also provide beneficial services in gardens by preying on common garden pests, including aphids, slug eggs, and small caterpillars. This natural pest control can reduce the need for chemical interventions.

When conditions outdoors become too dry or hot, earwigs may seek shelter indoors, entering homes through cracks around windows, doors, or foundations. They gravitate toward damp areas within homes, such as basements, bathrooms, and kitchens. While their presence indoors can be a nuisance, earwigs do not cause structural damage to homes or transmit diseases to humans. Their indoor presence is accidental, driven by environmental conditions or by being inadvertently brought inside with items like potted plants or firewood.

Dispelling Common Earwig Myths

A persistent misconception about earwigs is that they intentionally crawl into people’s ears to lay eggs. This is a long-standing myth without scientific basis; ear canals are not suitable for insect egg-laying. While any small insect could theoretically enter an ear, earwigs do not actively seek human ears.

The pincers, or cerci, at the rear of an earwig serve several practical functions. They are primarily used for defense against potential threats, for capturing prey, and for assisting in folding their large, membranous hind wings neatly under their short forewings after flight.

Despite their intimidating appearance, earwigs are harmless to humans. Although they can deliver a pinch if agitated or handled, it is not strong enough to break the skin and feels more like a slight nip. Earwigs are not venomous and pose no significant threat to human health.
