A Ruby-throated Hummingbird has been recorded living for over nine years, and a Rufous Hummingbird for nearly nine years. Factors Affecting Longevity

The availability and quality of food, primarily nectar from flowers and small insects, are fundamental for these birds, given their exceptionally high metabolic rates. Challenges associated with long-distance migration, such as harsh weather conditions and the immense energy expenditure required, also contribute to mortality. Human impacts also pose substantial threats to hummingbird longevity. Habitat loss due to development and agriculture is a significant concern for many species. Pesticide use can directly harm hummingbirds by disrupting their metabolism and reducing their insect prey, which are a source of protein.
