The calcaneus serves as a critical attachment point for the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the human body. This powerful tendon connects the calf muscles to the back of the calcaneus. The contraction of the calf muscles, pulling on the Achilles tendon, allows for plantarflexion of the foot, a movement that points the toes downward and is necessary for pushing off the ground during walking, running, and jumping. This mechanical advantage provided by the calcaneus and Achilles tendon system is fundamental for propulsion and dynamic movement.
