For planets like Uranus, which are too far for direct radar echoes, scientists rely on Johannes Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion. Kepler’s laws describe how planets move around the Sun, with his third law connecting a planet’s orbital period to its average distance from the Sun. By knowing the orbital period of Uranus, astronomers can determine its distance relative to Earth’s distance from the Sun. Once Earth’s average distance to the Sun was precisely measured using radar ranging, it provided a baseline to calculate the distances of all other planets.

The Scale of Our Solar System

To put Uranus’s distance into perspective, consider Earth’s average proximity to the Sun, which is 1 AU. This means Uranus is, on average, more than 19 times farther from the Sun than Earth. This immense separation also impacts how long sunlight takes to reach the planet.

While light from the Sun reaches Earth in about 8.3 minutes, it takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes to travel to Uranus. This considerable light travel time underscores the vastness of space within our solar system, highlighting the challenges involved in exploring these distant worlds.
