Unveiling the Largest Wolves
Among living wolf subspecies, the Northwestern wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), also known as the Mackenzie Valley wolf, stands as one of the largest. Individual males of this subspecies can weigh up to 175 pounds (79.4 kg) and measure up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) in length, including the tail. Their shoulder height typically ranges from 26 to 36 inches (68 to 91.5 cm). The Interior Alaskan wolf (Canis lupus pambasileus) is another contender, with males averaging around 124 pounds (56.3 kg) and reaching lengths of up to 6 feet (1.8 meters). Some exceptional individuals of the Interior Alaskan wolf have reportedly weighed as much as 179 pounds (81.4 kg).
Looking back in time, the extinct Dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus) represents the largest wolf ever recorded. These prehistoric canids, which roamed North America until about 10,000 years ago, were significantly more robust than modern wolves. Dire wolves averaged between 132 to 150 pounds (60 to 68 kg), with some larger specimens potentially reaching up to 200 pounds (90.7 kg), although skeletal limitations suggest a maximum of around 243 pounds (110 kg). They stood approximately 3.2 feet (97 cm) tall at the shoulder and measured about 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) from nose to tail.
