What Is the Biggest King Cobra Ever Recorded?

The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the world’s longest venomous snake, captivating human interest with its formidable presence. Renowned for its impressive length, unique behaviors, and specialized diet, its maximum size is a frequent topic of interest. Understanding its dimensions offers insights into the biological and environmental factors that shape its growth.

King Cobra Length Records

The “biggest” King Cobra primarily refers to its length, as weight varies considerably and is less commonly documented for record-keeping. Adult King Cobras typically measure between 10.4 and 13.1 feet (3.18 to 4 meters) long. However, some individuals can reach significantly greater lengths. The longest King Cobra reliably recorded was an 18-foot 8-inch (5.71-meter) specimen. This snake was captured in April 1937 near Port Dickson, Malaysia, and displayed at the London Zoo. It was euthanized in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II to prevent public danger.

Factors Influencing King Cobra Size

King Cobras achieve their impressive sizes due to environmental conditions, dietary habits, and continuous growth throughout a relatively long lifespan. They thrive in warm, humid environments, such as dense forests and bamboo thickets, across their range from India to Southeast Asia. These habitats provide ample prey for these specialized predators.

Their diet consists almost exclusively of other snakes, a behavior known as ophiophagy, reflected in their scientific name, Ophiophagus hannah (“snake-eater”). This includes both non-venomous species like rat snakes and other venomous snakes such as cobras and kraits. Consuming large prey provides the necessary nutrients for sustained growth. As apex predators, they face minimal predation, allowing them to live up to 20 years in the wild and continue growing.

Distinguishing Features of the King Cobra

Beyond its size, the King Cobra possesses several unique characteristics. It can raise the front part of its body significantly, sometimes up to one-third of its total length, which can be taller than an average human. When threatened, it can also flatten its neck ribs to form an intimidating hood.

The King Cobra’s venom is primarily neurotoxic, affecting the nervous system and leading to paralysis. Although not the most potent, the sheer volume it can inject in a single bite is substantial, capable of incapacitating large animals. The King Cobra is also the only snake species known to build an elaborate nest for its eggs using leaves and debris, and the female diligently guards this nest. This parental care, combined with their sharp eyesight and a distinctive low-pitched hiss, highlights their complex behaviors.
