How and When to Apply Fertilizer
The initial step is to incorporate a slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting, mixing it thoroughly into the top few inches of the growing medium. This initial application provides the background nutrition necessary for the plant to establish a strong root system during its first few weeks. Consistent application is far more effective than sporadic heavy feedings, which can damage the roots.
Once plants are established and growing vigorously, usually two to three weeks after planting, begin the liquid feeding schedule. Ground-planted petunias should be fed approximately every two to three weeks, depending on soil quality. Correcting Nutrient Deficiencies
A petunia not receiving adequate nutrition will quickly display visual symptoms indicating a deficiency. One of the most common issues is chlorosis, or the yellowing of the leaves, which often signals a lack of nitrogen or iron.
