Rhinos are among the largest land mammals, known for their immense size and distinctive horns. Rhino Species and Their Average Weights
The five surviving rhino species exhibit a wide range of average weights.
The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is the largest, with adult males typically weighing between 2,000 to 2,400 kilograms (4,400 to 5,300 pounds), while females are somewhat smaller, ranging from 1,300 to 1,600 kilograms (2,870 to 3,530 pounds). Newborn white rhino calves weigh 40 to 60 kilograms (88 to 132 pounds) at birth.
The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros, is the second largest species. Adult males can reach 2,500 to 2,700 kilograms (5,500 to 6,000 pounds), and females typically weigh around 1,800 kilograms (4,000 pounds). Calves of this species are notably large at birth, weighing between 58 to 70 kilograms (128 to 154 pounds).
The black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is smaller than its white African counterpart. Adult males generally weigh between 750 to 1,100 kilograms (1,650 to 2,425 pounds), and females are around 700 kilograms (1,540 pounds). Black rhino calves typically weigh 40 kilograms (88 pounds) at birth.
The Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is comparable in size to the black rhinoceros. Adults of both sexes generally weigh between 900 and 2,300 kilograms (1,980 to 5,070 pounds).
The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is the smallest of all rhino species. Adults typically weigh between 500 to 960 kilograms (1,100 to 2,100 pounds). Sumatran rhino calves are born weighing 40 to 50 kilograms (88 to 110 pounds).
What Affects a Rhino’s Weight
A rhino’s weight is influenced by several biological and environmental factors beyond just species averages.
Age plays a significant role. Calves are born at a small size and experience rapid growth, gaining one to two kilograms daily in species like the Sumatran rhino. They continue to gain weight as they mature through juvenile stages until reaching their adult size, which can take several years.
Sex also contributes to weight differences. Male rhinos, often referred to as bulls, are generally heavier and larger than females, known as cows. This dimorphism is evident across most rhino species, with male white rhinos, for instance, being significantly heavier than females. These differences can be linked to reproductive roles and behaviors, such as males defending territories.
Diet and nutrition are fundamental. Rhinos are mega-herbivores, consuming large quantities of plant matter daily. White rhinos, being grazers, consume large amounts of grass, while black rhinos, as browsers, feed on leaves, twigs, and shrubs. The availability and quality of forage, which can fluctuate seasonally, directly impact their ability to gain and maintain weight. Overfeeding in captivity, particularly with energy-rich foods, can lead to obesity and related health issues.
