They use sticks to extract termites, rocks to crack nuts, and leaves as sponges. Some populations sharpen sticks into spears for hunting, showcasing an understanding of form and function. They also demonstrate planning by arriving at termite nests with materials to create multiple tools, anticipating future needs.
Their problem-solving skills are evident in various tasks. Chimpanzees can infer problems and recognize solutions, even selecting correct photographs depicting solutions to human struggles. They solve complex puzzles, sometimes combining multiple steps and understanding cause-and-effect. Chimpanzees have also shown the ability to spontaneously take turns to solve computer-based number sequencing tasks.
Chimpanzees possess impressive memory capabilities, particularly in spatial and numerical tasks. Young chimpanzees have outperformed human adults in working memory tests, rapidly recalling the precise position and sequence of up to nine numbers on a screen. This suggests an extraordinary capacity for numerical recollection, sometimes superior to human adults in specific contexts.
Their communication extends beyond vocalizations and gestures. Some captive chimpanzees learn to use sign language or symbol-based communication systems. They acquire and use signs and phrases. Some studies have even observed chimpanzee-to-chimpanzee signing.
Chimpanzees also exhibit complex social cognition. They understand social hierarchies, engage in tactical deception, and demonstrate empathy. For instance, they can deceive others by approaching food from a side not visible to a competitor or by initially moving away from food to avoid detection. This indicates an understanding of what others can and cannot see.
Chimpanzee Cognition Compared to Humans
While chimpanzees are intelligent, their cognitive profile is distinct from humans. Humans and chimpanzees share many fundamental cognitive skills due to their close evolutionary relationship, including communication, insight, planning, decision-making, and processing complex social information. Chimpanzees also show individual variations in intelligence linked to brain size and organization, similar to humans.
However, human cognition diverges significantly in areas such as complex abstract reasoning, generative language, and cumulative culture. While chimpanzees can learn symbols and understand aspects of human language, they generally do not grasp the complex syntax that allows humans to create new meanings by combining words.
Despite these differences, chimpanzees can sometimes outperform humans in specific cognitive tasks, particularly those measuring basic strategizing and working memory. Chimpanzees excel in quickly remembering and applying information, a skill that can be faster than human performance. This highlights that while human cognitive abilities are broad, chimpanzees possess specialized intellectual strengths that reflect their unique evolutionary path.
