A liver biopsy, while more invasive, can provide a definitive diagnosis by revealing specific changes in liver tissue, such as glycogen depletion and signs of autophagy. However, it is not always recommended.

The primary treatment for starvation hepatitis focuses on careful and gradual nutritional support, often called refeeding. This involves slowly reintroducing calories and nutrients to allow the body to adapt and prevent complications like refeeding syndrome. Refeeding syndrome is a serious condition characterized by electrolyte imbalances that can occur if nutrition is introduced too rapidly.

Close monitoring of liver function tests and electrolyte levels is performed throughout refeeding to track recovery and adjust nutritional intake. Normalization of liver enzymes occurs as caloric intake increases and weight gain progresses.
