This process aims to create a sample that is representative of the broader population, thereby enhancing the external validity of the study, which refers to the generalizability of the findings to a wider context.
In contrast, random assignment occurs after participants have been selected for a study and focuses on how those participants are then distributed into different experimental or control groups. While random sampling addresses who is in the study, random assignment addresses how those individuals are sorted within the study. A study can utilize both random sampling and random assignment, or just one, depending on its specific research questions and design.
