Convective heat loss involves heat transfer to the surrounding cooler air. Conduction is the loss of heat when a newborn is placed on a cooler surface, such as an un-warmed bed or weighing scale. Why Newborns Are Susceptible

Dressing the baby in layers, including a hat, helps reduce heat loss from their large head surface area. Skin-to-skin contact, also known as kangaroo care, is an effective method where the baby is placed directly on the parent’s bare chest and covered with a blanket. Recognizing and Responding to Cold Stress

Recognizing the signs of cold stress in a newborn is important for timely intervention. A baby experiencing cold stress may exhibit lethargy, reduced activity, or a weak cry. Their skin might feel cool to the touch, particularly on the abdomen or back, and could appear pale or mottled. Difficulty feeding or a lack of appetite can also be indicators.

If cold stress is suspected, immediate action is necessary. Placing the baby in skin-to-skin contact with a parent is a rapid way to provide warmth. Wrapping the baby snugly in warm, dry blankets is also beneficial. If the baby’s temperature does not improve, or if symptoms such as rapid breathing, low blood sugar, or decreased oxygen levels develop, seeking prompt medical attention is advised.
