What Onychomhexis Looks Like

The defining physical characteristic of onychorrhexis is the presence of linear grooves that run vertically, extending from the base of the nail near the cuticle to the free edge at the tip. If a systemic cause is suspected, blood tests may be ordered to check for nutritional deficiencies, such as iron-deficiency anemia, or to evaluate hormone levels for conditions like thyroid disease.

Once the cause is determined, management strategies combine both targeted medical interventions and practical lifestyle modifications. If a deficiency is identified, treatment involves specific nutritional support, such as iron or biotin supplementation, to address the lack of components needed for healthy nail growth. For cases linked to inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis, a doctor may prescribe topical treatments, such as corticosteroid ointments, to reduce inflammation around the nail matrix.
