Nystatin swish and swallow is a liquid medication formulated as an oral suspension, primarily used to combat fungal infections. This specific form of nystatin is designed to be administered by mouth, where it acts topically within the oral cavity. As an antifungal agent, nystatin works by directly targeting and disrupting the cellular structure of fungi, preventing their growth and spread.
What Nystatin Swish and Swallow Treats
Nystatin swish and swallow is commonly prescribed to treat oral candidiasis, an infection more widely known as oral thrush. Oral thrush occurs when a type of yeast called Candida albicans, which is naturally present in the mouth, overgrows and causes symptoms. This fungal overgrowth can lead to creamy white, slightly raised patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, and sometimes on the roof of the mouth, gums, or tonsils. These patches may resemble cottage cheese and can cause redness, soreness, or a burning sensation, making eating or swallowing difficult. Nystatin works by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, which increases its permeability and leads to the leakage of cellular components, effectively stopping the fungus.
How to Administer Nystatin Swish and Swallow
Before each use, the bottle should be shaken well to ensure the medication is evenly mixed. The prescribed dose, typically measured with a dropper or a special measuring device, should then be placed into the mouth. For adults and children, the usual dose ranges from 4 to 6 milliliters, often divided with half of the dose placed on each side of the mouth.
The liquid should be swished around the mouth and gargled for as long as possible, ideally for one to two minutes, before being swallowed. This medication is generally taken four times a day, and it is important to complete the entire course of treatment, which typically lasts seven to fourteen days, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning. Avoiding eating or drinking for five to thirty minutes after taking the dose can help ensure optimal contact time with the oral tissues.
Important Safety Information
While nystatin swish and swallow is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects. Common side effects include mild gastrointestinal upset such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort. Irritation or a burning sensation inside the mouth may also occur. If these effects persist or worsen, contact a healthcare provider.
Seek immediate medical attention if more severe reactions develop, such as signs of an allergic reaction including skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Redness, blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, also warrant prompt medical evaluation. Before starting nystatin, inform your healthcare provider about any allergies, all medications you are currently taking (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements), and any existing medical conditions, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Nystatin oral suspension must be stored at room temperature, typically between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C), and should not be frozen.
