The range of deliverables is broad. Medical Affairs vs. Commercial Communications

One important distinction within the field is between medical affairs work and commercial work. Medical affairs focuses on scientific exchange: publishing clinical data, supporting medical education, generating real-world evidence, and identifying gaps in clinical knowledge. This side of medical communications is bound by strict requirements around scientific accuracy and balanced reporting of both positive and negative findings.

Commercial communications supports the marketing and sales functions. This includes promotional materials, sales training content, and branded campaigns. While still required to be scientifically accurate, commercial work is more explicitly persuasive in its goals. Many medical communications agencies handle both types of work, but the teams, processes, and compliance standards often differ significantly between them.

Ethical Standards and Guidelines

Because medical communications directly influences how treatments are understood and prescribed, the field operates under formal ethical frameworks. The most widely recognized is Good Publication Practice (GPP), a set of guidelines for publishing company-sponsored biomedical research. How Digital Has Changed the Field

Medical communications has expanded well beyond print journals and live conferences. The shift toward digital and omnichannel strategies has reshaped how content reaches its audiences. Omnichannel engagement integrates multiple communication channels into a coordinated system that delivers consistent, personalized experiences. From there, career paths branch in several directions: deeper scientific specialization, strategic planning, account management, or leadership roles. The CMPP credential, while not mandatory, signals professional credibility and is increasingly valued by employers and clients. The field attracts people who enjoy science but prefer communicating it over conducting it in a lab, and its steady market growth suggests strong demand for these skills in the years ahead.
