Lumbar degeneration is primarily a result of the natural aging process, as spinal discs naturally stiffen and wear down over time. Most people show some degree of disc degeneration after age 40, even without symptoms. Genetic predisposition also plays a significant role, making some individuals more susceptible.
Lifestyle factors can contribute to lumbar degeneration. Obesity places increased pressure on the lumbar discs and facet joints, accelerating wear. A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity can weaken core muscles, leading to increased strain on the discs. Repetitive heavy lifting (especially with improper technique), previous spinal injuries, or trauma can also contribute. Smoking is another factor that can negatively impact disc health by constricting blood vessels and slowing healing.
Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Non-surgical treatments are often the first approach. Physical therapy is a common recommendation, focusing on strengthening core muscles, improving posture, and increasing flexibility.
Medications, such as over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. For more severe pain, prescription pain relievers or muscle relaxants may be prescribed for short periods. Corticosteroid injections, delivered directly into the epidural space around the spinal cord, can provide targeted pain relief by reducing inflammation around irritated nerves. Lifestyle modifications, including weight loss and ergonomic adjustments, are also encouraged.
When conservative treatments do not provide sufficient relief, surgical interventions may be considered after at least six months of non-surgical approaches. Decompression surgeries, such as laminectomy or discectomy, aim to relieve pressure on compressed nerves by removing a section of bone from a vertebra or part of a damaged disc. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces the load on the lumbar spine, decreasing stress on the discs and joints. Practicing good posture, whether sitting, standing, or sleeping, helps distribute pressure evenly across the spine and minimizes undue stress. Ergonomic adjustments at work or home, such as using an ergonomic chair with lumbar support and positioning monitors at eye level, can significantly reduce strain.
When lifting objects, maintain a neutral spine, bend at the hips and knees, engage core muscles, and use leg muscles for power, keeping the load close to the body. Avoiding twisting motions while lifting is also advised.
