Neuriva Original contains two active ingredients: 100 mg of coffee fruit extract and 100 mg of phosphatidylserine. You take one capsule per day. That’s the core formula, and it’s simpler than the marketing might suggest. The brand also sells upgraded versions (Neuriva Plus, Ultra, and Memory 3D) that add B vitamins and other nutrients, but those two compounds are the foundation of every Neuriva product.
Coffee Fruit Extract
The first ingredient, whole coffee fruit extract, comes from the fruit that surrounds the coffee bean. It’s not the same as drinking coffee, and it contains very little caffeine. Its purpose in Neuriva is to raise levels of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which helps brain cells grow, survive, and form new connections.
A pilot study in older adults with mild cognitive complaints found that a single dose of whole coffee fruit extract increased BDNF levels in the blood by roughly 41% compared to a placebo. BDNF appears to work by shifting the balance between excitatory and calming signals in the brain, promoting the kind of neural activity linked to learning and alertness. That said, a short-term spike in a blood marker doesn’t automatically translate to better thinking over time, so the clinical picture is more nuanced than the percentage alone suggests.
Phosphatidylserine
The second ingredient, phosphatidylserine (PS), is a fatty compound that occurs naturally in brain cell membranes. It plays a role in how brain cells communicate, influencing the release of key chemical messengers involved in mood, focus, and memory. Animal research has shown that PS supplementation increases levels of several neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine.
Human studies on plant-derived PS, typically sourced from soybeans, have tested doses of 100 to 300 mg per day. In one 12-week trial of 30 older adults with memory complaints, 300 mg daily of soy-based PS significantly improved memory recognition, memory recall, executive function, and mental flexibility on computerized tests. A separate double-blind trial of 78 elderly subjects found positive effects on cognitive performance, particularly in people who scored lower at the start. Neuriva provides 100 mg per capsule, which is on the lower end of what these studies used, though some trials did show benefits at that dose over longer periods.
What the Clinical Trial on Neuriva Showed
Beyond studies on individual ingredients, there is one peer-reviewed trial that tested the Neuriva Original formula itself. Published in Neurology and Therapy, this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study gave 138 healthy adults (ages 40 to 65) with self-reported memory problems either Neuriva or a placebo daily for 42 days.
Compared to the placebo group, people taking Neuriva showed statistically significant improvements in several areas. They were more accurate at remembering numbers from a list, faster at responding correctly on memory tasks, and better at recognizing pictures they had been shown earlier. The study concluded that six weeks of Neuriva supplementation was safe, well tolerated, and beneficial for memory, accuracy, focus, concentration, and learning in this population.
It’s worth noting what this study doesn’t tell you. The improvements were measured on computerized cognitive tests in a controlled setting. Whether those gains translate into noticeable differences in daily life, like remembering where you left your keys or staying focused through a long meeting, is harder to say. The study also lasted only 42 days, so long-term effects remain an open question. And the participants all had self-reported memory concerns, meaning the results may not apply to someone with no cognitive complaints.
What’s in the Other Neuriva Versions
Neuriva comes in several product tiers beyond the Original formula. Neuriva Plus, Ultra, and Memory 3D all build on the same coffee fruit extract and phosphatidylserine base but add varying combinations of B vitamins (typically B6, B12, and folate) and, in some versions, additional compounds. The specific dosages vary by product and are listed on each label. B vitamins support nervous system function and energy metabolism, but if you’re not deficient in them, the added benefit from supplementation is generally modest.
Side Effects and Safety
Both coffee fruit extract and phosphatidylserine have favorable safety profiles at the doses used in Neuriva. The 42-day clinical trial specifically noted the supplement was well tolerated, and phosphatidylserine has been studied in elderly populations for decades without major safety signals. Some people report mild digestive discomfort, particularly at higher doses of PS.
Because phosphatidylserine can influence neurotransmitter activity, it has the potential to interact with medications that affect brain chemistry, including blood thinners and drugs for sleep or mood. If you take prescription medications, it’s worth checking for interactions before adding Neuriva to your routine. As a dietary supplement, Neuriva is not FDA-approved to treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and its manufacturing is not subject to the same oversight as prescription drugs.
