Hydrosalpinx is a medical condition where a fallopian tube becomes blocked and fills with fluid. This fluid accumulation can cause the tube to swell, often resembling a sausage-like shape. The presence of hydrosalpinx is a common factor contributing to female infertility.

The female reproductive system includes two fallopian tubes, which connect the ovaries to the uterus. Each month, an egg is released from an ovary and typically travels through one of these tubes. The fallopian tube is also the usual site where sperm and egg meet for fertilization.

In a healthy reproductive process, the fertilized egg, or embryo, then journeys through the open fallopian tube to implant in the uterine wall. Its presence impedes the normal passage of the egg, sperm, or embryo, disrupting the reproductive process.

The fluid prevents the fimbriae—finger-like projections at the end of the tube—from properly capturing an egg. This makes natural conception difficult or impossible.

Recognizing the Signs and Causes

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is another common diagnostic tool, using a contrast dye and X-ray to reveal blockages. Laparoscopy, a surgical procedure, is considered the most definitive method as it allows direct visualization of the fallopian tubes and surrounding pelvic organs.

Treatment options for hydrosalpinx vary depending on the individual’s circumstances and desire for pregnancy. Surgical interventions may include salpingectomy, which involves removing the affected fallopian tube(s). For cases where the tube is not severely damaged, procedures like neosalpingostomy (creating a new opening in the tube) or fimbrioplasty (repairing the fimbriae) might be considered to restore function. If surgical repair is not feasible or successful, in vitro fertilization (IVF) offers a reproductive option by bypassing the fallopian tubes entirely, with fertilization occurring outside the body before the embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Hydrosalpinx impacts fertility by creating both mechanical and physiological barriers to conception. The fluid physically blocks the passage of eggs and sperm, making natural fertilization challenging.

Beyond the physical obstruction, the fluid within a hydrosalpinx can be embryotoxic, meaning it can negatively affect embryo quality and development. This toxic effect can reduce the receptivity of the uterine lining, thereby lowering implantation rates and increasing the risk of miscarriage, even during IVF cycles.
