Using aged or composted mulch is one way to mitigate this risk, as the initial, most intense decomposition phase has already passed.

A common mistake is the creation of a “mulch volcano,” which involves piling the material excessively high against the trunk of a tree or the stem of a shrub. This practice traps moisture against the bark, creating an environment perfect for the development of fungal pathogens and rot, which can compromise the tree’s vascular system. Excessive mulch depth also encourages the plant’s roots to grow upward into the mulch instead of downward into the soil, leading to poor stability and potential girdling roots. Wood mulch, particularly when applied improperly near a foundation, can also attract pests like termites, which are drawn to the consistently moist environment it creates.
