Gravel mulch is a collective term for various stone materials, each possessing distinct physical properties. Crushed stone has sharp, angular edges resulting from mechanical processing. These irregular shapes allow the pieces to interlock tightly, creating a stable surface that resists shifting underfoot or with heavy rain.
Conversely, river rock and pea gravel are naturally weathered stones that are smooth and rounded due to water erosion. Pea gravel is typically smaller (1/8 to 3/8 of an inch), and its smooth texture is comfortable for walking surfaces. River rock is generally larger, offering a more prominent, decorative appearance with natural hues of white, tan, and gray.
Lava rock is unique due to its porous nature and relatively light weight, resulting from gases escaping during its volcanic formation. This porosity makes it an excellent insulator and allows water to penetrate easily. Finally, decomposed granite is composed of fine, sandy particles that pack down to create a stable, natural-looking surface, often used for pathways and trails.

The functional properties of gravel mulch suit environments where conventional mulches are impractical. Its density and weight provide effective weed suppression by blocking sunlight necessary for seed germination. While some weeds may sprout on top, the stone’s contrasting color makes them easy to spot and remove.
Gravel helps with moisture retention by acting as a barrier that reduces water evaporation from the soil surface. However, it absorbs solar radiation, which can increase soil temperatures in hot climates compared to organic mulches. This quality is beneficial in cooler regions, where retained heat can extend the growing season for plants.
The longevity and fire-resistant nature of stone are highly beneficial in specific design contexts. Gravel mulch is a staple in xeriscaping, a type of low-water gardening, as it conserves soil moisture. It is also the material of choice for creating decorative pathways and for lining drainage areas where water needs to be dispersed quickly without eroding the soil.
Installation and Maintenance Considerations
Proper installation is necessary to maximize the effectiveness of gravel mulch. Bed preparation involves clearing the designated area of all existing vegetation to prevent growth into the new layer. This clean surface is then often lined with a high-quality landscape fabric or geotextile membrane.
The fabric serves the dual purpose of creating an impenetrable barrier for weeds emerging from below and preventing the stone from sinking into the soil. After the barrier is laid, the gravel should be spread to a uniform depth, typically between 2 to 4 inches. Maintaining this depth is important to fully obscure the underlying fabric and provide adequate coverage for weed control.
Long-term maintenance is minimal, primarily involving the removal of organic debris such as fallen leaves and dirt that accumulate on the surface. If organic material builds up, it creates a medium where weed seeds can germinate on top of the stone, defeating the barrier’s purpose. Occasional light raking may be required to keep the surface level and replenish any stone that has settled or migrated.
