CNA training is a state-approved educational program that prepares you to work as a certified nursing assistant, providing hands-on patient care in nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare settings. What CNA Training Covers
The curriculum is built around the practical skills you’ll use every shift. The largest portion focuses on Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs: helping patients bathe, dress, eat, use the bathroom, brush their teeth, and move safely in and out of bed. You’ll learn to take and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate, along with measuring and documenting a patient’s weight.
Infection control and safety protocols make up another significant chunk. This includes proper handwashing technique, how to put on and remove gloves and gowns correctly, using transfer belts when moving patients, ensuring non-skid footwear is worn, and keeping call buttons within a patient’s reach. You’ll also learn how to position patients in bed to prevent pressure injuries and how to maintain their privacy and dignity throughout every task.
Beyond physical skills, classroom hours cover basic anatomy, nutrition, communication with patients and nursing staff, recognizing changes in a patient’s condition, and understanding residents’ rights. The goal is to make you competent not just in performing tasks, but in noticing when something is wrong and reporting it to the supervising nurse.
How Long Training Takes
Most CNA programs run between 4 and 12 weeks, depending on whether you’re enrolled in a full-time accelerated track or a part-time schedule. A program at Mt. California, New York, Illinois, Florida, Maine, Oregon, and over 20 other states all mandate additional hours beyond the federal minimum. Some states require 120 hours or more. Before enrolling, check your state’s specific requirement so you choose a program that meets it.
Each state’s department of health (or equivalent agency) approves and oversees training programs. In Indiana, for example, the Department of Health must approve every program before any training can begin. No program can operate without this approval, which means attending a state-approved program is non-negotiable if you want your training to count toward certification.
Where Training Happens
CNA programs are offered through community colleges, vocational schools, the American Red Cross, and sometimes directly by nursing homes and hospitals. Clinical rotations typically take place in long-term care facilities or hospital settings, where you work with actual patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Students providing care to residents during clinicals must always have a licensed nurse overseeing their work.
Some employers, particularly nursing homes facing staffing shortages, offer free CNA training in exchange for a commitment to work at their facility for a set period after certification. This can be a smart option if cost is a barrier, though you’ll want to understand the terms of any work agreement before signing.
What It Costs
Program tuition at community colleges and vocational schools typically ranges from roughly $600 to $2,000, depending on the institution and state. One important detail: because CNA programs are often only a few credits, they may not qualify for federal financial aid. The Denver program, at five credits, explicitly warns students it is not financial aid eligible. Payment in full or a payment plan is required at enrollment. That said, some states offer workforce development grants, and Medicaid-funded nursing facilities sometimes cover training costs entirely.
Prerequisites for Enrollment
Entry requirements vary by state and program but are generally minimal. Most programs require you to be at least 16 or 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED (though not all states require this), pass a criminal background check, and complete certain health screenings or immunizations like a TB test and flu shot. Some programs also require current CPR certification before clinicals begin. The Certification Exam
After completing your training program, you must pass a state competency exam to be placed on your state’s nurse aide registry. Keeping Your Certification Active
CNA certification isn’t permanent. Most states require renewal every two years. In Arizona, for instance, you must have worked at least 8 paid hours performing nursing assistant duties within the previous two years to stay on the registry. Some states also require a certain number of continuing education hours at renewal. If your certification lapses, you may need to retake the competency exam or, in some cases, repeat training entirely, so keeping track of your renewal date matters.
