CNA school is a short-term training program that prepares you to work as a certified nursing assistant, one of the fastest entry points into healthcare. Programs typically run 4 to 12 weeks depending on your state, combining classroom instruction with supervised hands-on practice in a clinical setting. After completing the program, you take a state certification exam to earn your credential and start working.
How Long CNA Programs Take
The federal government requires a minimum of 75 hours of training, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. In reality, most states go well beyond that floor. Thirty states and the District of Columbia require more than 75 hours, with some states mandating up to 180 hours. Thirty-two states also require more than the federal minimum of 16 clinical hours, with clinical requirements reaching as high as 100 hours in some places.
What this looks like in practice depends on the program format. Full-time programs that meet five days a week can finish in as little as four weeks. Part-time or evening programs, designed for people who are working, may stretch to eight or twelve weeks. Community colleges sometimes fold CNA training into a semester-long course.
What You Learn in CNA School
The classroom portion covers the basics of patient care: infection control, communication with patients and families, nutrition, body mechanics, recognizing changes in a patient’s condition, and understanding residents’ rights. You’ll also learn how to document vital signs and report observations to nurses.
The hands-on clinical portion is where most of the learning happens. Skills you’ll practice and be tested on include:
- Vital signs: measuring blood pressure manually, counting pulse and respirations, recording weight
- Personal care: giving bed baths, providing mouth and foot care, cleaning dentures, assisting with toileting and catheter care
- Mobility: transferring patients from bed to wheelchair using a transfer belt, helping patients walk safely, repositioning patients in bed
- Infection control: proper handwashing technique, putting on and removing gowns and gloves
- Range of motion: guiding patients through gentle joint exercises for shoulders, knees, and ankles
- Feeding and dressing: helping patients who can’t eat independently, dressing patients who have weakness on one side of their body
These skills are aligned with the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program, which standardizes what CNAs across the country are expected to know. Your state may add additional competencies beyond this core list.
Where to Find a Program
CNA programs are offered at community colleges, vocational schools, the American Red Cross, and some hospitals and nursing homes. The key thing to verify is that the program is approved by your state’s board of nursing or health department. Each state maintains a list of approved programs, typically searchable on the state agency’s website. Graduating from an unapproved program means you won’t be eligible to sit for the certification exam.
Nursing homes are worth special attention. Federal law requires nursing homes to cover the cost of CNA training for people who work for them. If you get trained elsewhere but are hired by a nursing home within 12 months of certification, you may also be reimbursed for your training costs. This makes nursing home-sponsored programs one of the most affordable paths into the field.
How Much CNA School Costs
Tuition varies widely. Community college programs often fall in the $500 to $1,500 range. Private vocational schools may charge $1,000 to $3,000 or more. On top of tuition, expect to pay for a textbook, scrubs or a uniform, a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff, and the state certification exam fee. These extras can add a few hundred dollars.
Beyond nursing home-sponsored training, some programs offer financial aid, workforce development grants, or payment plans. State workforce agencies sometimes fund CNA training for eligible candidates as part of job placement programs.
Requirements to Enroll
Exact prerequisites vary by state, but most programs require you to be at least 16 or 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Some states allow enrollment without a diploma. A background check is standard, and many programs require a negative tuberculosis test or basic health screening before you begin clinical rotations. Individual schools may layer on their own requirements, such as CPR certification or a drug screening.
The Certification Exam
After completing your training program, you must pass a state competency exam to become certified. The exam has two parts: a written test and a skills demonstration.
The written portion consists of 70 multiple-choice questions (10 of which are unscored pilot questions used for future test development). If reading is a barrier, most states offer an oral exam alternative with 60 multiple-choice questions and 10 reading comprehension questions. The skills portion requires you to perform a set of randomly selected clinical tasks in front of an evaluator, following the same checklists you practiced in school. You’ll need to pass both parts to earn your certification.
Keeping Your Certification Active
Renewal rules differ by state. In Illinois, for example, CNA certification technically doesn’t expire, but it becomes inactive if you go 24 consecutive months without working at least one paid 8-hour shift performing nursing-related duties under a licensed nurse’s supervision. Most states have a similar “use it or lose it” structure with a two-year window. If your certification lapses, you’ll generally need to retake the competency exam or complete a refresher course.
Pay and Job Prospects
The median annual wage for nursing assistants was $39,530 as of May 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment is projected to grow 2 percent from 2024 to 2034, which is slower than average but still translates to consistent demand. Nursing homes, hospitals, and assisted living facilities are the primary employers, and turnover in these settings means openings are common even when overall growth is modest.
Moving Beyond CNA
Many people use CNA certification as a stepping stone. The most common next move is enrolling in a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or registered nurse (RN) program. CNA-to-RN bridge programs are specifically designed for this transition and typically take one to two years, covering nursing theory, health assessment, and advanced clinical practice. After completing a bridge program or a traditional associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing, you’d take the national licensing exam for registered nurses.
Working as a CNA before pursuing a nursing degree has a practical advantage: you enter nursing school already comfortable with patient care, medical terminology, and the pace of clinical settings. Some nursing programs also give preference to applicants with CNA experience.
