Bear grass, with its long, slender leaves and tall flower stalks, often captures attention in wild landscapes. Despite its appearance, this distinctive plant is not a true grass but holds a different botanical identity. Despite its common name, bear grass is not a true grass but belongs to the lily family, specifically Melanthiaceae. Its scientific name, Xerophyllum tenax, highlights its characteristics: “xero” (dry) and “phyllon” (leaf) refer to its dry, grass-like foliage, while “tenax” (tough) signifies its leaf strength. This perennial herb grows in dense clumps, with long, wiry, basal leaves extending from a short, woody rhizome at ground level.

These leaves, typically dull olive green and rough-edged, can reach lengths of up to 1 meter (3 feet). When it blooms, bear grass sends up a stout, unbranched flowering stalk that can soar to heights of 0.6 to 2 meters (2 to 6 feet). At the top of this stalk, a dense cluster of small, creamy-white flowers forms a plume-like inflorescence. The common name “bear grass” likely comes from observations of bears foraging near the plant or its resilience.

Where Bear Grass Thrives

Bear grass is native to mountainous regions of western North America, from British Columbia south to central California, and eastward into Idaho, Montana, and northwestern Wyoming. It flourishes in subalpine meadows, open forests, and clearings, often at higher elevations, from near sea level to over 2,000 meters (6,600 feet).

The plant exhibits adaptations to its rugged habitats, particularly its resilience to wildfires. It is a fire-resistant species that thrives following a burn, sprouting quickly from its underground rhizomes. This re-sprouting ability is important for its ecological success in fire-prone landscapes, as periodic burns can lead to strong new growth and increased blooming. Bear grass also tolerates various moisture conditions, growing well on drier sites, rocky slopes, and scree slopes.

In its natural environment, bear grass plays a role in supporting various wildlife species. Its flowers attract pollinators like bees, beetles, and sometimes butterflies, moths, and wasps. The plant also provides food for herbivores like elk, deer, and mountain goats, which graze on its leaves and flower stalks. While bears may not typically eat the plant, they have been observed using its leaves as denning material. Following disturbances like wildfires, bear grass contributes to ecosystem recovery by helping with soil stabilization and site revegetation.

Its long, fibrous leaves are valued for their strength, durability, and flexibility, making them a material for basket weaving.
