Baby powder is a moisture-absorbing, friction-reducing powder applied to skin to prevent chafing, rashes, and irritation. While it’s most associated with diaper changes, its uses extend well beyond the nursery. The core function of baby powder is simple: it absorbs moisture and reduces friction between surfaces. The talc-free baby powder market is growing roughly twice as fast as the talc-based segment, with projected growth of 5 to 9 percent annually compared to 3 to 6 percent for talc products.
Today’s alternatives rely on plant-based starches and natural clays. The most common ingredients include cornstarch, arrowroot powder, tapioca starch, and kaolin clay. Many products combine several of these with soothing additions like chamomile, calendula, aloe, or coconut oil. All of these alternatives absorb moisture effectively. Cornstarch in particular is highly hydrophilic, meaning it aggressively draws in water, which makes it excellent at keeping skin dry. Major brands like Johnson & Johnson now offer both traditional and talc-free versions, while newer brands often skip talc entirely.
Inhalation Risk With Babies
The biggest practical risk of baby powder has nothing to do with what’s in it. It’s the fine airborne cloud created when you shake it out. Babies can inhale those tiny particles, and their small airways are especially vulnerable. The American Academy of Pediatrics has flagged baby powder aspiration as a serious hazard, noting that the true number of inhalation incidents is likely far higher than reported. If you use powder on an infant, the safest approach is to shake it into your hand away from the baby, then apply it gently to the skin. Never sprinkle it directly, and keep the container out of a child’s reach.
Removing Sand at the Beach
One of the most popular non-skincare uses for baby powder is getting sand off skin after a day at the beach. It works because of competing moisture attraction. Sand clings to your skin by sticking to the thin layer of water on its surface. When you dust baby powder over sandy skin, the powder particles compete with the sand for that moisture, and they win. The powder absorbs the water that was holding the sand in place, the sand dries out, and it falls right off.
Cornstarch-based powders work best for this because of the way their particles are structured, making them even more water-attracting than talc. A small bottle in your beach bag saves you from tracking half the shoreline into your car.
Lifting Grease Stains From Clothing
Baby powder can rescue a shirt from a fresh oil or grease stain. The method is straightforward: cover the stain generously with powder, let it sit for several hours (overnight is even better), then brush off the powder and wash the garment normally. The starch draws oil out of the fabric fibers through absorption, the same property that makes it effective on skin. The key word is “fresh.” Once an oil stain has set and gone through the dryer, powder is unlikely to pull it out.
