These methods include analyzing the robust musculature and structure of an orca’s jaw, observing the types of prey they consume, and comparing their anatomical features to other large predators whose bite forces have been measured or more reliably estimated. Observations of incidents involving captive orcas also contribute to these estimations, along with studies on the pressure required to break bones. Great white sharks have an estimated bite force around 4,000 PSI, while a human’s average bite is approximately 160 PSI.

Even powerful land predators like jaguars, with an estimated 1,500 PSI, or lions, at around 650 PSI, have considerably weaker bites than the estimated force of an orca. While direct measurements for orcas remain elusive, their estimated bite force, combined with their intelligence and highly coordinated hunting techniques, positions them as effective predators in marine ecosystems.
