The aging U.S. population continues to drive demand, particularly in long-term care and home health, where LPNs fill a critical role in managing chronic conditions and supporting older adults.
Pay varies significantly by setting and geography. LPNs in hospitals and specialty clinics often earn more than those in nursing homes, and states with higher costs of living tend to offer higher wages.
Advancing From LPN to RN
Many LPNs treat the role as a stepping stone toward becoming a registered nurse. LPN-to-RN bridge programs recognize the overlap in training and let you skip the introductory coursework that a traditional nursing student would complete. These accelerated programs typically take about 12 months and result in an associate degree in nursing, which qualifies you to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.
A typical bridge program requires around 72 credit hours total, split between general education courses, nursing courses, and experiential learning credits earned through your existing LPN experience. Community colleges and state schools are the most common places to find these programs, and many offer part-time or evening schedules designed for working nurses. After completing the bridge and passing the RN exam, your scope of practice expands to include patient assessment, care planning, and greater clinical independence.
