An LPN, or Licensed Practical Nurse, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians. LPNs complete about 12 months of training and hold one of the most accessible entry points into a nursing career. In Texas and California, the same role goes by a different name: Licensed Vocational Nurse, or LVN. The responsibilities are nearly identical regardless of the title.

What LPNs Actually Do

LPNs handle a wide range of hands-on patient care tasks. On a typical shift, that includes taking vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation), administering medications by mouth, injection, or topically, and performing wound care. Wound care alone requires knowing different cleaning and dressing techniques depending on the type of wound, whether it’s a surgical incision or a pressure ulcer, and monitoring for signs of infection.

Beyond those core clinical tasks, LPNs assist patients with daily activities like bathing, dressing, using the bathroom, and walking. They also perform basic diagnostic work: checking blood sugar levels, collecting urine samples, and helping with EKGs. In some states, LPNs with additional training can start and maintain IV lines, though this always requires supervision from a registered nurse or physician.

The scope of practice varies by state. Some states allow LPNs to perform tasks that others restrict to RNs. Regardless of location, LPNs are expected to recognize when a patient’s needs exceed their training and escalate to a registered nurse or physician. They’re also required to question any medical order they perceive as unsafe or unclear, a responsibility written directly into nursing regulations.

How LPNs Differ From RNs

The biggest differences between LPNs and registered nurses come down to education, autonomy, and scope. RNs complete either a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing, while LPN programs take about one year. RNs can work independently in most clinical settings, develop care plans, and supervise LPNs. LPNs carry out care plans but generally don’t create them.

In practice, LPNs work alongside RNs as part of the same care team. An RN might assess a new patient and design a treatment approach, while the LPN handles the ongoing monitoring, medication administration, and direct patient care that keeps that plan running day to day. LPNs are legally required to seek guidance from an RN when a patient’s condition deteriorates, when care needs surpass their skill level, or when they’re asked to perform an unfamiliar procedure.

Where LPNs Work

LPNs work across a range of healthcare settings. Nursing homes and long-term care facilities employ a large share of the LPN workforce, since these environments need consistent, hands-on patient care around the clock. Physician offices, home health agencies, and hospitals also hire LPNs, though hospital roles have shifted more toward RNs in recent years. Some LPNs work in rehabilitation centers, assisted living communities, or outpatient clinics.

Education and Licensing Requirements

Becoming an LPN starts with a high school diploma or GED. From there, you enroll in an LPN training program, typically offered through community colleges or technical schools. These programs run about 12 months and combine classroom instruction with clinical practice. Coursework covers anatomy, pharmacology, nutrition, and practical nursing skills like medication administration and patient assessment. Some programs require a background check or basic skills test before admission.

After completing the program, you must pass the NCLEX-PN, a national licensing exam. Every state requires this exam before you can practice. Once licensed, you can begin working immediately, which is one of the main draws of the LPN path compared to longer RN programs.

Career Growth and LPN-to-RN Programs

Many LPNs use the role as a stepping stone toward becoming a registered nurse. LPN-to-RN bridge programs are designed specifically for this transition, granting advanced standing so you don’t repeat coursework you’ve already completed. These programs typically lead to an associate degree in nursing. You’ll need to finish any general education courses that weren’t part of your original LPN program, and completion generally requires about 35 credits per year over two years.

Even without pursuing an RN degree, LPNs can specialize in areas like IV therapy, gerontology, or wound care through additional certifications. Experience in specific settings, such as long-term care or pediatrics, can also open doors to supervisory LPN roles or positions with higher pay.

Pay and Job Demand

LPN salaries vary by state, employer, and experience level, but the role provides a stable income relative to the one-year training investment. Geographic location makes a significant difference: LPNs in urban areas and states with higher costs of living tend to earn more. Overtime, shift differentials for nights or weekends, and specialty certifications can all increase take-home pay.

Demand for LPNs remains strong, driven by an aging population that needs more long-term and home-based care. Facilities that provide round-the-clock nursing, particularly nursing homes and residential care centers, consistently need LPNs to fill shifts. The combination of a short training timeline, steady demand, and clear advancement opportunities makes the LPN role one of the faster ways to start a career in healthcare.
