An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a vein, a process also known as intravenous (IV) iron supplementation. This medical procedure involves inserting a small catheter, typically in your arm or hand, through which a prepared iron solution is administered. Iron infusions are used when the body needs a rapid increase in iron levels or when other forms of iron supplementation are not suitable.
Why Iron Infusions Are Needed
Iron infusions are recommended for individuals with iron deficiency anemia, especially when oral iron supplements are ineffective, not tolerated, or when rapid iron replenishment is necessary. Oral iron supplements can cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, constipation, or stomach pain, making them difficult for some to take consistently or absorb properly.

The Iron Infusion Procedure
Before an iron infusion, a healthcare provider will review your medical history and assess your iron status through blood tests to determine the appropriate dosage. You do not need to fast for the procedure and can eat and take your regular medications as usual. Drinking plenty of fluids beforehand can help make it easier to locate a vein for the intravenous line.
During the infusion, a healthcare professional will clean an area before inserting a small needle into a vein. This needle connects to a plastic tube, or catheter, which is then taped to your arm to keep it secure. The catheter attaches to an IV bag containing the iron solution, diluted with sterile saline. The solution slowly drips into your vein, either by gravity or via a pump.
The duration of an iron infusion varies based on the specific iron formulation and prescribed dose, ranging from 15 minutes to several hours. Some newer preparations allow larger doses over a shorter period. Throughout the process, medical staff monitor your vital signs, including pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and breathing rate, to ensure comfort and to watch for immediate reactions. After the infusion, the IV line is removed, and you may be monitored for a short period, around 30 minutes, before discharge.
What to Expect After an Iron Infusion
After an iron infusion, most individuals can return to their normal daily activities. While well-tolerated, some may experience mild and temporary side effects. These can include a headache, dizziness, nausea, muscle and joint pain, a temporary metallic taste, or slight skin flushing.
Improvement in symptoms associated with iron deficiency, such as fatigue and shortness of breath, begins within a few days to a week after the infusion. Significant improvements in energy levels and overall well-being become noticeable within two to four weeks as the body utilizes the new iron to produce more hemoglobin. The long-lasting benefits of an iron infusion can extend for several months, helping to replenish the body’s iron stores more effectively than oral supplements in many cases.
A follow-up blood test is recommended two to four weeks after the infusion to check iron levels and assess the treatment effectiveness. The number of infusions needed depends on the severity of iron deficiency and the individual’s response. While one infusion may suffice for some, others with more severe deficiencies might require multiple sessions over several weeks to fully restore iron levels.
