What Is an Elephant Shrew? Facts About This Unique Mammal

Elephant shrews, also known as sengis, are small mammals native to Africa. They possess a distinctive appearance, with a long, flexible snout that resembles a miniature elephant’s trunk. Despite this resemblance, elephant shrews are not true shrews; they are instead more closely related to a group of African mammals that includes elephants, aardvarks, and manatees.

Defining the Elephant Shrew

Elephant shrews belong to their own mammalian order, Macroscelidea, and are not classified with rodents or true shrews. This classification places them within Afrotheria, a superorder of mammals that originated in Africa. There are 20 recognized living species, categorized into six genera, with body sizes ranging significantly from about 10 centimeters and 28 grams to over 30 centimeters and 700 grams.

These mammals feature a slender body, often covered in short, glossy fur that can be black, gray, brown, white, tan, or golden. Their prominent, flexible snout is used for foraging and sensory perception. Elephant shrews also have large eyes and ears, contributing to keen senses of vision and hearing. Their long legs are adapted for rapid movement and a hopping gait, earning them the nickname “jumping shrews.” They also possess a long, scaly tail, which some species use for scent marking.

Where They Live and What They Eat

Elephant shrews are found across Africa, inhabiting diverse environments from arid deserts and savannas to dense forests and woodlands. Their distribution spans much of the continent, though some regions like West Africa and the Sahara are excluded. Different species have adapted to specific ecological niches, such as sandy soils or thick leaf litter.

Their diet primarily consists of insects and other invertebrates, classifying them as insectivores. They actively forage for ants, termites, and other invertebrates, using their sensitive snouts to probe the ground and leaf litter. Once found, they can rapidly flick small food items into their mouths using their long tongues, similar to an anteater. Some species also consume small amounts of plant matter.

Distinctive Traits and Conservation

Elephant shrews are generally solitary animals, though many species form monogamous pairs that share and defend a common territory. Despite these pair bonds, individuals often maintain separate nests and do not frequently interact beyond reproductive purposes. They actively mark their territories using secretions from specialized scent glands, which also play a role in mate attraction. When disturbed or threatened, elephant shrews are known for their rapid, sometimes hopping, escape movements, using their powerful hind legs to reach speeds up to 28.8 kilometers per hour. Some species clear pathways through undergrowth to facilitate quick escapes from predators like snakes and birds of prey.

Reproductively, female elephant shrews typically give birth to small litters of one to three young after a gestation period ranging from 45 to 60 days. The young are born precocial, meaning they are relatively well-developed at birth, fully furred, and with their eyes open. They are capable of running within hours of birth and become independent quickly, often leaving the nest within 15 days. Females can produce multiple litters throughout the year, compensating for the small litter size.

While many elephant shrew species are considered stable, some face threats, primarily from habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities like deforestation and urbanization. This fragmentation limits their access to resources and potential mates, affecting population sizes. Some species have experienced population declines due to forest loss. Conservation efforts focus on protecting their habitats and raising awareness about these mammals.
