An EKG technician is a healthcare professional who operates electrocardiogram machines to record the electrical activity of a patient’s heart. It’s one of the fastest entry points into healthcare, with training programs that can be completed in as little as two months. EKG technicians work in hospitals, cardiology offices, and diagnostic clinics, providing the heart rhythm data that doctors rely on to diagnose conditions like arrhythmias, heart attacks, and other cardiac problems.

What EKG Technicians Do Every Day

The core of the job is running EKG tests from start to finish. That begins with preparing patients: explaining what the test involves, positioning them correctly (usually lying on their back or slightly reclined), and attaching electrodes to specific points on the chest, arms, and legs. Once the electrodes are in place, the technician operates the EKG machine to capture the heart’s electrical signals, monitors the patient during the test for any signs of distress, and then prints and summarizes the results for the physician to review.

Beyond standard EKGs, technicians often handle two other types of cardiac monitoring. Stress tests involve recording heart activity while a patient exercises, typically on a treadmill, to see how the heart performs under physical demand. Holter monitoring is a longer-term approach where the technician sets up a small portable device that the patient wears for 24 to 48 hours. The technician attaches the electrodes, explains how to wear the device during daily activities, and later interprets the recorded data, documenting rhythms and waveforms in the patient’s medical chart.

Administrative tasks round out the workload. Technicians schedule tests, file results in electronic medical records, and maintain their equipment to keep it calibrated and functioning properly.

The Technical Side of the Job

Getting a clean, readable EKG tracing is harder than it sounds, and much of a technician’s skill lies in the details of electrode placement and signal quality. A standard 12-lead EKG uses ten electrodes placed at precise locations on the body. Four go on the limbs (near the shoulders and ankles), and six are positioned across the chest in a specific pattern that follows the spaces between the ribs and landmarks like the collarbone line.

Placement has to be exact. If an electrode is even slightly off, it can produce a misleading reading that mimics a heart condition the patient doesn’t actually have, or obscure one they do. Technicians learn to identify the correct rib spaces by touch, which takes practice, especially on patients with larger body types or unusual anatomy.

Signal quality is the other constant challenge. Body hair, sweaty skin, loose electrode adhesion, and patient movement all create “noise” on the tracing. Technicians prep the skin by shaving hair at electrode sites when needed, wiping with alcohol to remove sweat and oil, and sometimes briskly rubbing with gauze to improve contact. They also ask patients to stay still, breathe calmly, and avoid talking during the recording. Even something as simple as storing electrodes at room temperature rather than in a cold supply closet improves conductivity. When the machine flags noisy data, the technician troubleshoots the issue, whether it’s a loose electrode, tension on a lead wire, or patient movement, and reruns the test.

Patient age and sex are entered into the machine before each test because the software’s interpretation algorithm adjusts its analysis based on these factors. Getting this step wrong can affect the automated reading the physician sees alongside the raw tracing.

Training and Education

Most EKG technicians complete a certificate program rather than a full degree. These programs are short, often running about two months and roughly 96 clock hours of instruction. Community colleges, vocational schools, and some hospitals offer them. The curriculum covers cardiac anatomy and physiology, heart disease, pacemakers, medical terminology, and healthcare ethics. On the practical side, students learn to operate and maintain EKG machines, practice placing 12-lead electrodes, and begin interpreting EKG strips to understand what normal and abnormal heart rhythms look like.

Some programs also introduce Holter monitoring and cardiac stress testing, which broadens a graduate’s employability. The prerequisite is simply a high school diploma or GED.

Certification Requirements

Certification isn’t legally required in every state, but most employers expect it. The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) offers the Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential, one of the most widely recognized in the field. There are two paths to eligibility. The first is completing an EKG training program within the last five years, along with evidence of having performed at least ten EKGs on live patients. The second is for people who skipped formal training and instead gained one to two years of supervised work experience.

Both paths require a high school diploma or GED. The certification exam tests knowledge of cardiac anatomy, electrode placement, rhythm recognition, patient care, and equipment operation. Holding the CET credential signals to employers that you meet a national standard of competence, and it often translates directly into higher starting pay and more job offers.

How EKG Technicians Differ From Medical Assistants

There’s overlap between the two roles that can cause confusion. Medical assistants perform EKGs as one small part of a much broader job that includes taking vital signs, drawing blood, assisting with exams, and handling front-office tasks. An EKG technician, by contrast, specializes. Their entire focus is cardiac diagnostics: running standard EKGs, setting up Holter monitors, assisting with stress tests, and interpreting the resulting data. This specialization means deeper technical knowledge of cardiac rhythms and more advanced troubleshooting skills when a tracing doesn’t look right.

For someone who enjoys direct patient interaction but wants to develop expertise in a specific diagnostic area rather than being a generalist, the EKG technician path offers that middle ground.

Work Settings and Career Growth

EKG technicians work in hospitals (especially emergency departments and cardiac units), outpatient cardiology practices, diagnostic testing centers, and physician offices. The work is physical in the sense that you’re on your feet, moving equipment, and positioning patients, but it’s not physically demanding compared to many healthcare roles. Shifts vary by setting. Hospital positions may include evenings, weekends, or overnight hours, while outpatient clinics typically follow standard business hours.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 3 percent employment growth for cardiovascular technologists and technicians from 2024 to 2034, roughly matching the average for all occupations. The aging population’s increasing need for cardiac testing supports steady demand. Many EKG technicians use the role as a stepping stone, gaining clinical experience and patient care hours before moving into more advanced positions like cardiac sonography, catheterization lab technology, or nursing. The short training period and relatively low cost of entry make it one of the most practical ways to get a foot in the door of healthcare.
