These growths are typically triggered by external factors such as physical injury, insect infestation, or infection from fungi or bacteria. For instance, certain pathogens, like the crown gall bacterium, can hijack the tree’s metabolism by inserting extra DNA that prompts the tree to produce the disorganized growth.
This process involves the tree’s growth hormones being disrupted, leading to a proliferation of cells in an uncontrolled manner. Instead of growing outward into a branch, the tree activates numerous dormant or “sleeping” bud cells, also known as adventitious buds. These buds fail to sprout and become overgrown by subsequent layers of wood, resulting in a dense, twisted mass of unsprouted tissue.

A common feature within burl wood is the presence of “eyes,” which are small, circular markings that resemble tiny knots or swirls. These eyes are the remnants of the numerous dormant buds that were encased within the growth, creating a highly figured surface. The randomized grain structure contributes to the wood’s stability, making it less likely to warp or split during the drying process compared to standard timber.
Working with this interlocked grain presents a challenge for woodworkers. The fibers run in multiple directions, which can cause tear-out and chipping when using conventional tools. Despite the difficulty in milling and finishing, the resulting dense and durable material, with its unique three-dimensional appearance, requires extra effort.

Due to its scarcity and the complexity of its internal figure, burl wood is reserved almost entirely for high-value decorative and artistic applications. It is rarely used for large structural purposes because of its unpredictable shape and limited size. This process of veneering is both economical and sustainable, allowing a small amount of solid burl to cover a large surface area. Burl veneers are frequently used for luxurious accents, such as dashboard panels in high-end automobiles, cabinetry in custom homes, and decorative wall panels.
