What Is a Seed’s Embryo and How Does It Germinate?

Anatomy of the Embryo

Cotyledons, also known as seed leaves, are another significant component of the embryo. These structures store food reserves, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, which nourish the embryo before it can produce its own food through photosynthesis.

From Embryo to Plant: The Germination Process

Germination is the process where a dormant embryo transitions into an active, growing seedling. This transformation requires specific environmental conditions: water, appropriate temperature, and oxygen. Water absorption, known as imbibition, is the initial step, causing the seed to swell and soften its protective coat. This influx of water also activates enzymes within the seed, which begin breaking down stored food reserves into a usable form for the growing embryo.

Following imbibition, the radicle is the first part of the embryo to emerge from the seed coat, growing downwards to establish a root system. Soon after, the plumule begins to elongate, pushing upwards to form the shoot that will eventually develop into the plant’s stem and leaves. During these early stages, the cotyledons continue to supply the necessary nutrients, sustaining the seedling until it can develop true leaves and begin photosynthesis independently.

The Embryo’s Vital Role

The seed embryo is important for plant reproduction and survival, acting as the bridge between generations. It encapsulates the genetic blueprint for a new plant, ensuring the continuation of species. This miniature plant, protected within the seed, can endure unfavorable conditions, allowing plants to survive periods of stress and disperse to new locations.
