Hunting Strategies
Polar bears employ several hunting techniques to secure their primary prey, often displaying a keen sense of smell. One common method is still-hunting, where a bear waits motionless by a seal’s breathing hole in the ice for extended periods. When a seal surfaces for air, the bear pounces with speed and strength, capturing it with its powerful jaws. Other strategies involve stalking seals resting on the ice, ambushing them at ice floes, or raiding seal dens where pups are born. Despite their hunting prowess, a polar bear’s success rate can be low, with estimates ranging from 2% to 15% of attempts resulting in a kill.
