NPs specialize in specific populations (e.g., family health, pediatrics) and must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) before pursuing their advanced degree.
Physician Assistants (PAs) are trained under a medical model similar to physicians, focusing on disease pathology, diagnosis, and generalist medicine across the lifespan. These frameworks define the degree of clinical autonomy through three models. Full Practice Authority (FPA) allows NPPs, often NPs, to evaluate, diagnose, order, interpret tests, and manage patient treatment, including prescribing, without mandated supervision or collaboration.
In states with Reduced Practice Authority, the NPP’s ability to engage in their full scope of practice is restricted, typically requiring a career-long collaborative agreement with a physician. The third model, Restricted Practice Authority, is the most limiting, requiring the NPP to be supervised, delegated, or team-managed by a physician throughout their practice.
