The Chemical Definition and Sources

A natural oil is chemically defined as a lipid substance that is liquid at room temperature and insoluble in water. These oils are predominantly composed of triglycerides, molecules formed from three fatty acid units attached to a glycerol backbone. This structure places them within the larger class of lipids, which are organic compounds derived from living organisms.

The most common sources for natural oils are plants, where the oil is typically stored in the seeds, nuts, fruits, or kernels. Examples include olive oil from fruit pulp, sunflower oil from seeds, and coconut oil from the kernel. Fixed Oils Versus Essential Oils

Natural oils are separated into two groups based on their chemical composition and physical properties: fixed oils and essential oils. Fixed oils, also known as carrier oils, are non-volatile, meaning they do not easily evaporate when exposed to air. They are composed of fatty acids in the form of triglycerides and leave a greasy stain when applied to paper. Olive, coconut, and jojoba oils are common examples, frequently used as a base to dilute other substances.

Essential oils, in contrast, are volatile oils that readily evaporate at room temperature, making them highly aromatic. They are not composed of fatty acids but rather of concentrated aromatic compounds like terpenes and esters. Because they evaporate completely, they do not leave a greasy residue. Essential oils, such as peppermint or lavender, are highly concentrated and typically used for their scent and potent effects.

Methods of Extraction and Purity

The method used to extract a natural oil significantly impacts its quality and purity. Fixed oils are often obtained through mechanical methods like pressing the plant material. Cold-pressing is a preferred method as it uses minimal heat, helping the oil to retain more of its nutritional value and natural characteristics. Other fixed oils may be obtained using solvent extraction, which yields a high quantity of oil but can potentially leave trace residues.

For essential oils, the most common technique is steam distillation, where steam is passed through the plant material to vaporize the aromatic compounds. The resulting vapor is then condensed to separate the oil from the water.

A different method, cold-pressing or expression, is used almost exclusively for extracting essential oils from citrus fruit peels, such as lemon and orange. This mechanical process avoids heat, which helps to preserve the fresh scent and chemical composition of the oil.

Practical Uses and Categorization

The diverse chemical profiles of natural oils lead to a wide range of practical applications, often categorized by the oil type. Fixed oils, with their high content of triglycerides and essential fatty acids, are central to culinary uses, serving as cooking mediums and nutritional sources. In cosmetic and skin health applications, fixed oils function primarily as moisturizers, helping to nourish the skin and improve its barrier function. Specific fixed oils, like jojoba and olive oil, are often blended into lotions and serums for their emollient properties. Essential oils are also used in cosmetic products, typically for fragrance or targeted effects, such as tea tree oil in blemish treatments.

Essential oils are most notably utilized in aromatic and therapeutic applications, leveraging their volatile nature and concentrated aromatic compounds. These oils are commonly dispersed into the air through diffusers for scent, or diluted with a fixed oil for use in massage. These applications use the distinct scents of oils like lavender and frankincense to influence mood and promote a sense of well-being.
