While its mined source qualifies it as natural, its quick-release nature and sodium content lead to debate regarding its suitability for organic agriculture, often restricting its use.
How Natural Nitrogen is Processed in the Soil
The mechanism by which natural fertilizers release their nutrients is fundamentally different from that of synthetic, water-soluble products. Most natural nitrogen is initially held in complex organic molecules that plants cannot directly absorb. This organic nitrogen must first be converted into inorganic forms through a two-step process driven entirely by the soil’s microbial community.
The initial step in this conversion is called mineralization, or ammonification, where various bacteria and fungi break down the organic matter, releasing nitrogen as ammonium. Ammonium is an inorganic form that plants can utilize, and it also binds to soil particles, making it relatively stable. The rate of this release is directly influenced by environmental factors, including soil temperature, moisture levels, and oxygen availability, meaning the fertilizer only becomes active when conditions are favorable for microbial life.
The second step is nitrification, where a different group of specialized bacteria converts the ammonium into nitrate. Nitrate is the most easily absorbed form of nitrogen for many plants, but it holds a negative charge and does not bind to the negatively charged soil particles. This makes nitrate highly mobile and susceptible to being washed out of the root zone (leaching) or lost to the atmosphere through denitrification, especially in saturated soils.
Because the entire process is biologically mediated, natural fertilizers exhibit a characteristic slow-release profile, providing a steady supply of nitrogen over time as the microbes work. This gradual release minimizes the risk of fertilizer burn, which occurs when excessive soluble salts draw moisture away from plant roots. It also helps reduce the loss of nitrogen to the environment compared to large, sudden applications of highly soluble synthetic forms.
Guidelines for Effective Application
Successful use of natural nitrogen fertilizers relies on timing the application to match the slow, biological nature of their nutrient release. Since nitrogen primarily promotes leafy growth, the best time to apply these amendments is just before or at the beginning of a plant’s active growth period, such as in early spring. For long-lasting, granular amendments like feather meal, applying them in the fall allows microbes to begin the mineralization process so the nitrogen is available when plants need it most in the spring.
Application methods vary depending on the product’s form, but generally, solid amendments should be incorporated into the soil for best results. Mixing the fertilizer into the top few inches of the soil ensures it is accessible to the soil microbes and plant roots. Alternatively, side-dressing—sprinkling the amendment a few inches away from the plant base—works well for established plants and allows the roots to grow toward the nutrients.
Liquid fertilizers, such as fish emulsion or compost tea, offer a faster nutrient boost because the nitrogen compounds are already partially broken down or are immediately soluble. These liquid applications are often used when a quick response is needed, or as a foliar spray to correct an acute deficiency.
Caution is important with application rates, even with natural sources, as excessive nitrogen can lead to too much foliage at the expense of fruit production or cause plant damage.
