By blocking this exit, the plug creates a closed chamber underneath the mower deck, which is essential for the mulching process.
The specialized mulching blade features multiple cutting surfaces or a curved, high-lift design that generates a powerful upward airflow. This aerodynamic shape allows the blade to lift and suspend the freshly cut grass clippings within the sealed deck area. The design of the blade and the plug work in concert to maximize the time the clippings spend circulating inside the deck before falling to the ground.
How Fine Shredding Recycles Grass
The mulching system relies on airflow dynamics and retention time inside the deck. The specialized blades create a powerful vortex, or circular airflow, within the sealed cutting chamber. This vacuum-like effect keeps the grass clippings suspended and circulating just above the turf.
As the clippings cycle through this intense airflow, the mulching blade strikes and re-strikes them multiple times, a process known as re-cutting. The goal is to reduce the clippings into tiny fragments, ideally less than half an inch in length. Once the grass particles are sufficiently reduced, they lose the aerodynamic lift and fall through the standing grass blades and down to the soil surface. This fine shredding ensures the particles are small enough to decompose rapidly and avoid smothering the lawn.
