Once hatched, monarch larvae, or caterpillars, feed solely on milkweed leaves. This specialized diet is crucial for their development, providing both food and shelter. The milkweed also provides a chemical defense mechanism for the monarchs. Among the many species, Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is widespread across North America, characterized by its stout stems, broad oval leaves, and fragrant pink to lavender flowers. Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) prefers moist habitats and features narrower, lance-shaped leaves with pink to purplish-pink flower clusters. Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) stands out with its vibrant orange to yellow-orange flowers and is unique among milkweeds for lacking the milky sap. Each species has specific preferences for habitat and soil moisture, which can also aid in identification.
Cultivating Milkweed for Conservation
Cultivating native milkweed species is a direct way to support monarch butterfly populations. When selecting a site, most milkweed varieties thrive in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Well-drained soil is generally preferred, although certain species like Swamp Milkweed tolerate or even prefer consistently moist conditions.
For planting, seeds can be sown outdoors in the fall to allow for natural cold stratification, which aids germination. Alternatively, starter plants can be transplanted in the spring after the last frost. Milkweed plants generally do not require much fertilization and are drought-tolerant once established, needing additional watering only during prolonged dry periods.
