Instead of roots, kelp have a holdfast, which anchors the organism to rocky seafloors but does not absorb nutrients. All parts of the kelp absorb nutrients directly from the surrounding water.
The stipe of kelp resembles a plant stem, supporting the blades, but it does not transport nutrients. The blades are leaf-like structures where photosynthesis occurs. To maximize light exposure, many kelp species feature gas-filled bladders called pneumatocysts, which provide buoyancy and help the blades float towards the water’s surface. These adaptations allow kelp to thrive in dynamic underwater environments.
Where Kelp Thrives
Kelp forests grow in cool, nutrient-rich coastal waters around the world, particularly in temperate and polar regions. They require clear water for sufficient sunlight penetration for photosynthesis, as their growth begins on the ocean floor. Optimal water temperatures for most kelp species range between 6 and 20 degrees Celsius (43 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit). These marine organisms often flourish in areas with upwellings, where nutrient-rich deeper waters are brought to the surface.
Kelp forests cover approximately 25% of the world’s coastlines. Significant habitats are found along the Pacific coasts of North and South America, including Alaska, Canada, and California. Other regions include Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, Iceland, and Norway. While predominantly in cooler waters, some species can also be found in warmer, tropical latitudes, such as the Galapagos Islands.

Industrially, kelp is a source of alginates, which are complex carbohydrates extracted from its cell walls. These alginates are widely used as thickeners, gelling agents, and emulsifiers in various products. They are found in food items such as ice cream and salad dressings, preventing ice crystallization and providing desired textures. Beyond food, alginates also have applications in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
