What Is a Grass Carp? Facts, Diet, and Ecological Impact

The grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is a large, herbivorous freshwater fish belonging to the minnow family, Cyprinidae. It is known for its diet of aquatic vegetation and serves as a biological control agent in many aquatic ecosystems.

Defining Characteristics

Grass carp possess an elongated, torpedo-shaped body that is robust and somewhat chubby. Their coloration typically ranges from dark olive on the back, transitioning to brownish-yellow or silvery on the sides, with a white belly. Their large scales are often outlined with dark edges, giving them a distinctive cross-hatched appearance.

The head of a grass carp is wide and scaleless, featuring a terminal mouth that is slightly oblique with firm, non-fleshy lips and no barbels, which distinguishes them from common carp. They have a shorter dorsal fin compared to some other carp species, usually with eight to ten soft rays. Adult grass carp commonly measure between 60 to 100 centimeters (about 23.5 to 39.5 inches) and can reach weights up to 45 kilograms (99 pounds), with some individuals growing even larger.

Natural Habitat and Introduction

The grass carp is native to East Asia, with its natural range extending from northern Vietnam to the Amur River basin along the Sino-Russian border. In its native lands, it has been cultivated for centuries as a food fish. This species primarily inhabits large, turbid rivers and associated floodplain lakes with abundant vegetation.

Introduced globally for aquatic weed management, grass carp arrived in the United States in 1963 and New Zealand in 1966 for aquatic plant control. Since then, the species has spread widely, reported in 45 of the 50 U.S. states and numerous other countries.

Diet and Ecological Impact

Grass carp consume large quantities of submerged and emergent aquatic vegetation. A single grass carp can consume up to 40% of its body weight in plant material daily, with young fish potentially eating two to three times their weight. This voracious appetite makes them effective for controlling nuisance aquatic plants.

Despite their role in weed control, grass carp can have significant negative ecological impacts when introduced outside their native range. They only digest about half of the plant material they consume, expelling the rest as waste into the water. This undigested matter enriches the water with nutrients, often leading to increased turbidity and algal blooms, which can decrease water quality and dissolved oxygen levels. By completely eliminating aquatic plants, grass carp can alter the trophic structure of an ecosystem, remove spawning habitats, and disturb sediment. This habitat alteration can negatively affect native fish and waterfowl populations that rely on aquatic vegetation for food, shelter, and breeding grounds.

Management Considerations

Given their potential ecological impacts, various approaches are used to manage grass carp populations, particularly in non-native environments. A common strategy involves the use of triploid grass carp, which are sterile and unable to reproduce. These fish are produced by subjecting fertilized eggs to temperature or pressure shocks, which results in them retaining an extra set of chromosomes and becoming infertile. This sterility helps control their numbers and prevents unintended population explosions if they escape managed waters.

Physical removal methods are also employed to control grass carp populations. These can include angling, the use of pop-nets, lift nets, baited traps, and herding with gill nets or seines. Bowfishing has also proven to be an effective method for removing these fish. However, grass carp are known for their wariness and ability to leap, making live capture challenging.
