The FCE culminates in a report detailing the individual’s demonstrated physical capabilities and limitations, which is sent to the referring party. The report translates the person’s physical tolerances into specific job demand categories. These categories, defined by regulatory bodies, range from Sedentary (requiring no more than 10 pounds of lifting occasionally) through Light, Medium, and Heavy, based on the maximum weight handled and the physical exertion required over an eight-hour workday.
The findings inform return-to-work decisions by identifying the specific accommodations or permanent restrictions needed to ensure a safe return to the workplace. For example, the report specifies a maximum weight an individual can safely lift or the maximum duration they can stand or sit. This information is used by employers to determine if the individual can perform the essential functions of their pre-injury job or if an alternative, less demanding position is necessary.
The FCE report is widely used in administrative and legal contexts. It provides objective evidence in workers’ compensation cases and disability claims to help establish the extent of an injury and its impact on earning capacity.
